Structural study of solid solution of protonic conductors Rb$$_{3-x}$$K$$_{x}$$H(SeO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ by single crystal neutron diffraction

The materials represented as M$$_{3}$$H(XO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ is known to exhibit a super protonic conductivity at rather low temperature. The protonic conductivity emerges upon a structural phase transition, and the phase transition temperature varies depending on the elements at M and X. In addition, the protonic conductivity also varies depending on the elements, but the origin has not been uncovered. In order to clarify the relation between the structure and the protonic conductivity including the phase transition mechanism, Solid solutions of super protonic conductors, Rb$$_{3-x}$$K$$_{x}$$H(SeO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ (x=0, 1, 2, 3), were structurally investigated by single crystal neutron diffraction. The structure analyses showed evident linear relation between the lattice parameters and x. Meanwhile, K was found to preferably reside at one of the two M sites. A apparent relation between the occupancy of K at one site and the transition temperature and the hydrogen-bond length were demonstrated.

SENJU is a new single crystal time-of-flight neutron diffractometer installed at BL18 of J-PARC. SENJU is designed for precise crystal and magnetic structure analyses under multiple extreme environments such as low-temperature, high-pressure and high-magnetic field, and also designed for diffraction measurements of small single crystals less than 1.0 mm$$^{3}$$ in volume. We have successfully achieved structure analysis of a laboratory X-ray size (0.1 mm$$^{3}$$) single organic crystal, measurement and visualization of a complex-shape diffuse scattering pattern and measurement of higher order magnetic reflections in high-Q region (Q$$>$$16${AA}$ $$^{-1}$$) by using SENJU. Those results show that the performance of SENJU is as we expected.

The Improvement of the instrument control system toward 1MW in J-PARC/MLF

At 1MW proton beam power in J-PARC/MLF, our experiment method will have to change high quality as well as high quantity. We have been developed the universal event recording system and the dynamic device control software. We have introduced the new DAQ board called "TrigNET" into our DAQ system for the universal event recording. TrigNET can output the event data which consist of the elapsed time from the trigger, the event source and the signal values of the devices. Because TrigNET has the SiTCP interface, we can simultaneously collect the device event data as well as the neutron event data by DAQ-Middleware. The dynamic device control software can concurrently control the neutron optics and sample environment devices as well as the DAQ in the instrument. The instrument control software framework called "IROHA" integrates the DAQ and device control, but its architecture is sequential control. So, we improve IROHA to be available dynamic device control.

The PLANET is the high-pressure beamline newly constructed at J-PARC. The beamline aims at revealing the effect of water on the Earth's interior. The most characteristic feature is to possess the huge 6-axis press with the maximum load of 500ton/axis, which can generate high-PT condition of 10 GPa and 2000 K, simultaneously. By using the state-of-the-art neutron diffraction and radiography techniques, the beamline offers microscopic and macroscopic information of materials at high-PT conditions. The beamline is designed so as to analyze structures of both crystalline and amorphous materials. The beamline is now being used by project members and will be opened for general users in the next February.

Performance evaluation test of radial collimators for chopper spectrometer at J-PARC/MLF

In order to obtain the good quality data in neutron scattering experiments using sample environmental apparatus, a countermeasure against the background is necessary. Radial collimator has been conventionally used to suppress the off-sample parasitic scattering without perturbing the sample scattering. Based on the evaluation results of shielding performance test, two kinds of shielding blades are applied for radial collimator according to the neutron energy range. Gd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ sheets are used as a shielding blade in AMATERAS (BL14) and Cd-coated thin plates are chosen for 4SEASONS (BL01). In this study, we will introduce the specification of two radial collimators, and report the results of evaluation tests performed at BL01 and BL14.

A Cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer AMATERAS

AMATERAS is a cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer installed at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of J-PARC. By using a series of high-speed (f $$<$$ 350 Hz) disk-choppers and owing to the high peak intensity from a coupled moderator source at MLF, AMATERAS is designed to realizes high-intensity and fine and flexible energy resolution measurements in quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments from cold to thermal neutron energy region. AMATERAS started the user program from the end of 2009 in parallel to commissioning work. In this presentation, we will show the current status of AMATERAS including the highlight of scientific outputs.

Software development for the effective utilization of event-recording data with TrigNET at MLF, J-PARC

MLF adopted the event data recording methods on the data acquisition system (DAQ). In this method, the time and position information of each neutron detection are recorded. Recently we developed successfully a DAQ electric module TrigNET, which records common electric signals as events synchronized with neutrons. TrigNET will connect with instrument devices and gather output signals from them, i.e. sample direction from goniometers, thermometers for sample and phase information from choppers controller. By analyzing events from TrigNET, neutron events can be filtered for each condition users want to see. This filtering method enables users to measure and analyze the information of the sample under various outer conditions more easily, for example phenomena induced by magnetic field or pressure and so on. In this presentation, we report the current status of software development for the filtering of event data with instrument and sample conditions.
